GameStop: Buy Haunting Ground, Capcom, PlayStation 2, Find release dates, customer reviews, previews and screenshots.
Essentially the umpteen-millionth Resident Evil clone that I've played, Haunting Ground tries to separate itself from the rest of the pack with some new gameplay elements. Bland graphics, so-so voice acting (big surprise there, what with this being a survival horror game), and ultimately some rather juvenile elements ultimately hurt this game.
Early in the game, you'll earn the friendship of a dog named Hewie, who can help protect your character, and whom you can interact with in a sort of limited friendship game sort of way. Fiona, your character, can also panic, at which time you'll lose control of the character as she runs around in a fright. She'll run somewhat uncontrollably, and if she runs into a wall she'll fall down, but for the most part, you'll get a little bit of a chance to react as Fiona loses her calm gradually, becoming more uncontrollable with every moment. Finally, you'll be able to run away from monsters and take advantage of various hiding spots to keep yourself safe.
That said, I found it relatively easy and yet frustrating to play. While making your way through the game puzzles and challenges are easy, it's also very easy to get stuck in a position where you're doomed to certain death, requiring regular reloads. Early on, you'll even be treated to having your young, beautiful, teenage female character being chased by a large, unintelligent, developmentally challenged thug that presumably wants to play with Fiona as if she were a doll. Given what it looks like when he manages to 'kill' her, I found this one of the least tasteful elements of the game.
Graphically, Haunting Ground is of average quality, but seems to have been designed by an adolescent game designer, given that the main character is ahem extremely well endowed, and clothed only in a sheet for the first few minutes of the game. As I noted earlier, there's nothing much in the way of good voice acting here, and in accompaniment, the plotline of the game is similarly lacking. In summary, I couldn't say I enjoyed this game, and it's relatively obvious why the game possesses its more titillating elements.

Hey capcom dudez, i appreciate the real-HD RE4 port for PC. But i think Haunting Ground more than all the others needs the HD treatment for the pc. this game is so good, so mature, so intense, so enjoying, so scary, and never in history we could see something near Hewie A.I. Duuuuuuuuuude and that OST. People claims for survival horror, and thats your chance with this game not well known by the community.

Remember when Capcom was going to release this as a PS2 Classic on PSN?

Your best chance is to buy RE4 on Steam to show that PC players want others old Capcom games released with proper ports on Steam too, heck i'm buying RE4 in hopes that they release DMC HD Collection and RE 5 Gold Edition on Steam.

Didn't care one bit for that RE4 HD re-re-re-remake. But an HD Haunting Ground on PC? Oh **** yes. Wouldn't even wait for a Steam sale to buy that. Unfortunately it's not gonna happen. Not enough people recognize what an awesome game this.

Never heard of it as I've never had a PS2, but if they released it on the XBLA arcade I'd give it a go. Is it that popular? I'd have thought that if it was then I would have seen at least one person request a character from the game in MvC3.

Fixed. Now you know who to blame. And the game didn't exactly flew off the shelves when it came out (certified bomba). So not sure if doing an HD treament is worth it (for CAPCOM). And just in case someone asks: Resident Evil - Rated M for Minors!

Well, teh game was released during Re4 release, as a ps2 exclusive. it was certainly a glorious era, there was so much good games and maybe this did not see the spotlights, since there is no blood, zambies or guns to the marketing dudes work on. but I think right meow Capcom could regain gamers support by bringing back this A-MA-ZEING title to every platform since there is a crescent demand for decent horror gamez. ANNDDDDDDDD with the proper treatment, the graphics of this game can be as gud as RE4. |
